Styling Your Session: Simple, Soft, Intentional
A Guide to Effortless Session Styling
What you wear truly shapes the feeling of your photos, and it’s one of the most-asked questions I receive.
A common outfit challenge is when things start to feel visually disconnected: too many bold colours, busy patterns, or mismatched style levels within the same group. The solution is simple and intentional.
The Foundation: Building a Cohesive Look
Start with a shared, soft colour palette and build each outfit from there.
Choose a soft, shared palette (neutrals or earthy tones work best)
Select one anchor outfit (often mom’s outfit) and build around it
Mix textures, not loud colours or patterns
Keep everyone in a similar style level (all casual or all elevated)
The result is a gallery that feels cohesive, effortless, and visually calm.

The Core Styling Approach
Soft fabrics, earthy tones, movement, and thoughtful coordination can completely shift the mood of a session, whether you’re envisioning something romantic and editorial, playful and candid, or soft and coastal.
The best outfits are always the ones that feel like you, while still complementing the location and overall vibe you’re drawn to.
Think:
Cream, beige, taupe
Soft blue, sage
Warm browns and muted earthy tones
Textures also play a huge role, especially in natural light:
Linen
Knit fabrics
Cotton
Flowing dresses
Soft layered pieces
Avoid neon colours, large logos, busy patterns, or perfectly matching outfits. Instead, aim for coordination over uniformity.

How Location & Season Shape Your Styling
Outfits should always feel connected to where and when your session takes place.
Location influences tone:
Beach → soft creams, linens, flowy fabrics, barefoot simplicity
Garden → romantic dresses, muted florals, elegant textures
Fields / tall grass → earthy tones, layered neutrals, soft movement
Urban / editorial → cleaner lines, monochromatic palettes, elevated basics
In-home → cozy textures, natural tones, lived-in comfort
Fall fields → warm earth tones, knits, boots, rich neutrals, layered texture
Time of year matters too: Spring and summer lean toward lighter fabrics and softer tones, while fall and winter naturally suit richer colours, layers, and deeper textures.
Outfit Inspiration by Session Type
Couples
Soft neutrals, layered textures, and movement. Romantic, elevated, but still relaxed.
Families
Coordinated tones over matching outfits. Soft contrast, shared palette, natural cohesion.
Maternity
Flowing dresses, fitted knits, and soft fabrics that highlight movement and emotion.

For Moms
Choose something that makes you feel confident and comfortable.
Flowing dresses and shirts, soft fabrics and easy textures photograph beautifully as they naturally catch light and movement. Some of the most meaningful moments happen in between prompts, walking, laughing, holding your children, simply being together.
For Kids
Keep it simple.
Neutral, comfortable clothing allows kids to move freely and keeps the focus on connection rather than outfits. Barefoot moments, soft textures, and relaxed pieces always photograph best.

Accessories & Layers
Small details make a big difference.
Hats, scarves, light jackets, and simple jewelry add texture, movement, and depth without overpowering the image. They also allow for subtle variation throughout the session without needing full outfit changes.
Keep everything intentional, minimal, and aligned with the overall palette.

The Overall Vibe
Warm evening light, soft movement, genuine connection, and moments that unfold naturally.
Most importantly, be yourself and have some fun with it, the best photos always come from real connection and simply experiencing life as it unfolds, being excited about creating memories and living life to the fullest.
The goal isn’t perfection, it’s preserving this season of life in a way that feels raw, beautiful, and timeless years from now, creating those nostalgic feels.
