Working With Me: What to Expect From Your Family Session

Working With Me: What to Expect From Your Family Session

Hello everyone!

If you've landed here because you're thinking about booking family photos, hi! I'm so glad you're here.

In this entry, I will take you through my whole process and what it feels like to have a session with me. I hope this inspires you to make your photoshoot your own, let go of the expectations, and simply feel free, rooted and calm..

When you work with me, my goal isn't to make your family look like someone else's family.

I want your photos to feel like you.

The little hands.

The belly laughs.

The cuddles.

The chaos.

The way your toddler runs away every five seconds, the way your baby grabs your necklace, the way your partner looks at you when you're not paying attention, these are the things I want to bottle up in a time capsule and give to you.

So whether you're planning maternity photos, welcoming a newborn, celebrating a first birthday, documenting your little family just because, or booking one of my shorter mini sessions, here's what you can expect when you work with me.

✨ Before your session

The first thing I want you to know is that you don't have to figure everything out yourself.

If you're wondering where to go, what to wear, what time to book, whether your kids will cooperate, or whether you should bring a certain outfit or prop, ask me! I love helping with this part. We'll talk about what you're hoping to capture, what feels most like you, and what kind of session makes the most sense for your family. From there, we can choose location, style and timing that naturally fits the way you want your photos to feel and this time you want to remember with your loved ones.

There isn't one "right" way to do family photos.

The ''right'' session is the one that gives you the kind of memories you actually want to keep.

🌿 What happens during the session?

This is probably the part people worry about the most.

"But what if my kids don't cooperate?"

Honestly?

They probably won't the entire time. And that's okay.

You are not alone. I hear so many parents apologizing after a session about how crazy their child/children were and you are not alone. I shoot so many families and I've seen it all.

I don't expect little ones to stand perfectly still and smile at the camera for an hour. That sounds exhausting for everyone involved.

Instead, we'll move.

We'll walk, play, cuddle, explore, pick up leaves, run around, have little breaks and probably make a few ridiculous noises along the way.

I'll give you direction when you need it, but I'm also going to give your family space to just be together.

You don't need to know how to pose.

That's my job.

I like to treat sessions as little adventures for your family. I watch your kids, follow their lead and pay attention to what lights them up. If they don't want to play Ring Around the Rosie, we'll move on. If the kids are loving the swing, we'll do it again and again. If they find a stick, a puddle or a patch of leaves more interesting than the camera, we'll probably make that part of the story too. I just ask that you get curious with them! Your session is meant to feel fluid, playful and natural, never rigid or overly posed. I'm there to guide you, but also to let your family be your family.

🤍 For the little ones

One of my biggest priorities during family sessions is making sure your kids don't feel like they're being forced through a photoshoot.

If they need a break, we take a break.

If they want to run, we'll run.

If they want to hold onto Mom's leg for the first 20 minutes, we'll work with that.

Sometimes the child who refused to smile for the first half of the session ends up being the one who gives us the biggest grin five minutes later.

There's no need to panic.

We're not racing against the clock. We're just giving your family space to settle in.

And honestly, some of the most beautiful photographs happen once everyone stops trying so hard.

🌸 Maternity sessions

Maternity sessions are a little different because we're documenting you, and this beautiful, strong and delicate season too.

Whether it's your first or not, this season can feel exciting and beautiful and uncomfortable and surreal all at the same time.

You might feel amazing one day and very much not amazing the next.

So we'll keep things comfortable, flattering and relaxed.

I'll guide you through posing and movement so you never have to wonder what to do.

And we'll make sure we capture both the beautiful portraits and the quieter moments, your hands on your belly, your partner looking at you, the anticipation of this chapter and the little details of this short time that you'll miss once you're holding your baby.

Because one day soon, this belly will be a little person running around beside you.

And you'll be so glad you photographed the before.

☀️ Mini sessions vs. full sessions

Mini sessions are perfect when you want something simple, quick and beautiful.

They're great for updating your family photos, seasonal portraits, milestones, Mother's Day, Christmas, or just because it's been a while.

They're short and sweet and still give us plenty of variety.

A full storytelling session gives us more room to breathe.

We can slow down.

We can explore a little more.

We can let the kids warm up.

We can capture the tiny details alongside the big moments.

There's a difference between getting a beautiful family portrait and having a gallery that feels like a little chapter of your life.

That's what I love about full sessions.

📷 And then I do my part.

After your session, I go through all those little moments and carefully choose the photographs that tell your story best.

I want your gallery to tell a story, not just show 100 versions of everyone looking at the camera.

I want movement.

Connection.

The in-between moments.

The photographs that make you stop scrolling through your gallery and think,

"Oh my gosh. I forgot they used to do that."

Because that's what photographs are really for.

Years from now, your kids probably won't remember if their hair was perfectly brushed.

But you'll remember the way they fit into your arms.

And you'll be able to see it.

💛 At the end of the day...

Family photography doesn't have to be perfect.

It doesn't have to be quiet.

It just has to be yours.

What does this season FEEL like? What do your kids LOVE right now? What are the BEST parts of these days, bring those moments into your session and let go of the expectations to be anyone but who YOU are!!

My job is to create a space where you can relax, be yourselves, and let me take care of the rest.

Whether we're documenting your first baby bump, your growing family, a tiny newborn, a first birthday, your first apartment together or simply this season of life you're currently living...

I want you to walk away with photographs that feel like you.

Because these little seasons move so. freaking. fast.

And someday, you'll be very glad you stopped long enough to remember them.

If you're ready to document your family, I'd love to hear what you're dreaming up. Let's make something you'll want to keep forever. 🤍

Xo, Helene
